January 2024 Instruction Letter from The Green Valley Stake Presidency to Ward Leaders

Dear Bishop,

We appreciate you and your ward leaders’ faithful efforts to organize and utilize Self-Reliance Initiative Groups in 2024. So much good is happening and lives are being blessed by your faithful and valiant efforts.

We have received some valuable feedback as to what works best for your wards as they schedule when and where to hold your courses. Instead of set starting dates, times and places we are asking you to prayerfully determine with your Ward Council when and where to hold these courses so that it works best for the participants being called to join the group. Our ultimate goal continues to have every member of our stake participate in a self-reliance course and be blessed by the principles of spiritual and temporal self-reliance and to teach these principles to their children and grandchildren.

In 2024, we ask that every ward sponsor one Personal Finance Self-Reliance and one Emotional Resilience.  The Utah Edication Initiative has been implemented in the stake by calling three couples to serve as both Stake Specialists and Education Mentors to assist wards that have identified those who would benefit in participating in the Utah Education Initiative.   These courses and the Utah Education Initiative can be found at utah.churchofjesuschrist.org.

Some wards will choose to offer these courses more than once or as needs arise. Others may choose to attend the course of another ward. We have found that calling the ministering brothers or sisters to attend with those most in need of the course has been very effective.

Bishop, we envision that the majority of your courses will be filled with members from your ward. We ask that you or your counselors meet in person with 12-16 individuals (including couples) from your ward and prayerfully extend a call with the proper doctrinal explanation of the goals and expectations of the course. Besides individuals with immediate needs, you should consider calling those in ward leadership roles to participate in the courses and others as directed by the Spirit.

We recommend that your Ward Welfare and Self-Reliance Specialists be called to facilitate these groups. Our Stake Welfare and Self-Reliance Specialists/Education Mentors are in place to train and lend support to your Ward Welfare and Self-Reliance Specialists.

Your clerks can order manuals from Church Distribution or electronic versions are available on the church website or the Gospel Library app. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to brother Michael Sumner of the High Council, Brother and Sister Buys or to any member of the stake presidency. We love you and your faithful ward leaders’ efforts to bless so many of our Heavenly Fathers children.

Your Stake Presidency,

President Lonnie Clove President Mark Gubler President Darren Ashton
